Newspaper notices can be a very good source of family information. However it must be stressed that this only applies to the more affluent families who could afford to have these notices placed.

For instance if a death record has been found further details on the death itself can be gained through a search of newspaper death notices for the weeks following the date of death shown in the record. These notices often list names of other family members and tend to include the name of the cemetery to which the deceased’s funeral proceeded (which can facilitate a grave search). In the years following the death, newspaper Anniversary notices often appear which give yet more information on family relationships.

Newspaper marriage notices are also a good source of further information regarding family relationships. Again it must be stressed that only relatively affluent families tended to take out such notices in the 1800's and early 1900's.
